Building Rapport with Your Employees

One of the best and most effective ways to become a better leader is by establishing a positive rapport with your employees and team. Some people have a knack for immediately connecting with others while some struggle to create that sense of trust and understanding. However, even for those who struggle to make that immediate connection, there are ways to still create those meaningful relationships.

Greet and Acknowledge

One of the easiest ways to start developing a relationship with your team is to simply say hello and goodbye every day. Just acknowledging their presence can go a long way. It also doesn’t hurt to throw in a comment about the weather or ask how their weekend was. Simple small talk makes you seem open and inviting which is a great foundation to any connection.

Non-work Related Chit-Chat

Beyond just the greeting and small talk, it’s important to also talk with your employees about non-work related topics. Getting to know them, and what they do outside of work, helps to build the foundations of trust. Maybe their kids play sports or maybe they love to hike. All of these things are great conversation starters to show that you have a vested interest in them not only as an employee but also as a person.

The Basics

Good communication is the most fundamental aspect of building rapport. Just being relaxed and smiling can set the other person at ease and open things up for a more meaningful conversation. Be sure to address the person by name and listen carefully. The things you learn about the person are unique to the individual and can help establish a deeper foundation later. And, as with most circumstances, make sure you don’t outstay your welcome. At the end of the day, we all have a job to do and long conversations can become uncomfortable when you’re worried about getting things done.

Meaningful relationships are the basis of any respected leader. Establishing rapport with your team should be just as important as achieving financial goals. Your team is what will drive the company to success, so investing in them is important. Build trust and connections now because they will certainly prove to be beneficial to your company in the long run.
