Being Relocatable Fuels Career Success

Being relocatable fuels career success

Throughout my life I have always been asked the question, “where do you see yourself in five years?” Five years ago, I could have never imagined I would be where I am today. At that time of my life I was content with being a Supervisor of Operations. I had a team of 15 to 20 people that I managed on a daily basis. I worked hard, was good at my job, and had aspirations to be more, but I didn't know when that would happen.

Fast forward to where I am today. I am a Director of Operations managing two Operations Managers who manage 18 Supervisors who manage more than 300 people. I still work hard, am still good at my job, but now I don’t just have aspirations to be more someday, I know that someday is possible. The difference between then and now is one simple thing; I was relocatable.

Being relocatable has not only changed my career, but it changed my life. Growing up in small town Iowa I never thought I’d leave, which I was okay with. I’ll never forget the fear I felt getting in my car and driving away from the life I’ve always known. But the benefits I’ve reaped because of that one decision outweigh the fear every single day.

While none of us truly know where we will be in the next five years, having an open mind and making the decision to expand your career by choosing to be relocatable truly makes the opportunities all of you potentially have that much greater.
